Nagadeepa Purana Vihara is a revered Buddhist temple located on Nagadeepa (or Nainativu) Island in
the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is a site of immense spiritual and historical importance, known for
its association with Lord Buddha and its role in promoting religious harmony in the country.

Historical and Religious Significance
Nagadeepa Purana Vihara is believed to mark the site where Lord Buddha visited during his second
journey to Sri Lanka, five years after attaining enlightenment. According to Buddhist chronicles, the
Buddha mediated a dispute between two Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, over a gem-studded
throne. His intervention brought peace to the region, and the throne was enshrined at the location,
making it a sacred site for Buddhists. 

Geography and Elevation 
Nagadeepa Island is a low-lying area, situated about 3 meters (10 feet) above sea level. The island is
small and surrounded by the calm waters of the Palk Strait. Visitors can reach it by a short ferry ride from
the mainland, usually departing from the Kurikadduwan Jetty on the Jaffna Peninsula.

The main temple features traditional Buddhist architecture, including a white stupa
(dagoba) that houses relics. 
The temple also has a shrine room with statues of Lord Buddha and intricate murals
depicting the Buddha-s visit to Nagadeepa.

Located nearby, this Hindu temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) and is an
