Mihintale is a sacred mountain near Anuradhapura, revered as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It was here, in 247 BCE, that the Buddhist monk Mahinda converted King Devanampiyatissa, establishing Buddhism on the island.

Mihintale is a pilgrimage site with a series of rock outcrops, stupas, and monastic ruins. The climb involves 1,840 granite steps, leading to breathtaking views and spiritual serenity.

Main Attractions in Mihintale

1. Ambasthala Dagoba (Mahinda-s Shrine)
The spot where Mahinda first preached Buddhism to the king.
A white stupa marks this sacred location.

2. Aradhana Gala (Meditation Rock)
A steep rock where monks meditated, offering panoramic views of the surrounding forests.

3.Kantaka Chetiya
One of the oldest stupas in Mihintale, featuring intricate carvings and ancient inscriptions.

4. Naga Pokuna (Serpent Pond)
A tranquil bathing pool carved in the shape of a cobra-s hood, used by monks in ancient times.

5. Mihintale Festival (Poson Poya)
Celebrated in June, thousands of pilgrims gather to honor the introduction of Buddhism.
The mountain is illuminated with lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere.
