Uda Walawe National Park, located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its vast herds of wild Asian elephants, making it one of the top destinations for elephant-watching. Established in 1972, it covers approximately 308 square kilometers (119 square miles) and encompasses a mix of grassy plains, scrub jungle, and forested areas. The park sits at an elevation ranging between 80 to 130 meters (260 to 430 feet) above sea level, providing a mostly flat terrain with gentle slopes that create an ideal environment for wildlife.

The primary attraction of Uda Walawe is the large population of elephants that can often be seen in groups, especially near water sources. Other key wildlife includes leopards, water buffalo, sambar deer, jackals, and a variety of bird species such as the white-bellied sea eagle and the painted stork. The park is also home to the Uda Walawe Reservoir, which plays a vital role in the ecosystem and supports aquatic birds, including migratory species.

Visitors can enjoy safaris by jeep, which offer access to scenic views of the reservoir and allow close-up experiences with the wildlife. The park-s dry-season landscapes, with sparse vegetation, offer excellent visibility for spotting animals, making it a popular year-round attraction.
